White wine - Donnafugata - Anthilia Sicilia Doc white Format: Glass bottle 75cl Intro: Sicily is one of the most wine-producing regions in Italy, together with Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Apulia. Sicily's wine-growing traditions are ancient and date back to the Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks and Arabs. Sicily boasts numerous indigenous grape varieties such as frappato, nero d'Avola, inzolia, catarratto, nerello mascalese and nerello cappuccio, malvasia delle Lipari and moscato d'Alessandria (zibibbo, from the Arabic zibib meaning 'a raisin'). Based on the type of grape, we can understand the cultivation area of the various vines mentioned above: Muscat wines, Moscato di Siracusa and Moscato di Noto we find them in the Syracuse area Wines based on Nero d'Avola, Frappato and Ceraselo di Vittoria DOCG are produced in the province of Ragusa Grillo, Grecanico, Catarratto and Inzolia vines are the protagonists of the Alcamo DOC La Malvasia delle Lipari famous Aeolian Islands in the Messina area On the slopes of Etna, considered 'an island within an island' due to the characteristic lava soil and the microclimate that characterises this area, we find Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, for red, rosé and sparkling wines and Catarratto and Carricante for white wines. From these vines are produced the famous Etna DOC. The province of Caltanissetta is home to one of Sicily's most recent DOCs, the Riesi Marsala is a historic DOC that takes its name from the municipality of the same name in the province of Trapani. GrapesLucido (synonym of Catarratto) and other native and international grape varieties. Soil and climateAltitude from 200 to 400 m a.s.l.; hilly terrain; clay loam soils with sub-alkaline reaction (pH 7.5 to 7.9) rich in nutrients (potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc) and total limestone from 20 to 35%). Mild winters; dry and windy summers with large temperature ranges between day and night. Vineyard: Vertical trellising with spurred cordon pruning, leaving 6 to 10 buds per plant. Density of 4,500-6,000 plants per hectare, with yields of 80-90 quintals per hectare. Vintage: A total of 604mm of rain was recorded compared to the average 662mm. In particular, after a winter with little rain, the abundant rainfall in May ensured that the soils were well supplied with water, which enabled the vineyard to cope with the high temperatures that persisted for about ten days in July. The following weeks were characterised by ideal climatic conditions. The year 2023 was a challenging one: thanks to scrupulous agronomic management, the vegetative production cycle ended regularly, resulting in well-ripened grapes. The production was lower than the average for this estate, but the quality was perfectly in line with the estate's objectives. Harvest: International varieties were harvested in August; native varieties - including Lucido (Catarratto), which is prevalent in the blend - were harvested from mid-August onwards; harvesting was completed in September Vinification and ageing: Fermentation in steel at a temperature of 14-16°C. Maturation in vats for two months and then at least two months in bottles before release. Tasting notesAnthìlia has a straw-yellow colour. Designer labels: The label is the face of a woman, as mysterious and elusive as the civilisation of the Elymians, an ancient people of western Sicily who founded Entella, in the area where Donnafugata's vineyards are today. Anthìlia is the name given in Roman times to the town of Entella atop the fortress of the same name. Anthìlia today is the name of a wine that is identified with the ancient territory from which it originates. It is the first wine to have been conceived at Donnafugata and still remains in the hearts of many admirers. At the table: Perfect with various hors d'oeuvres, with raw and fried fish, and vegetable flans; also try it with fresh cheese and white meat.
