White wine - Donnafugata - La fuga chardonnay Sicilia Doc Format: Glass bottle 75cl Intro: Sicily is one of the most wine-producing regions in Italy, together with Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Apulia. Sicily's wine-growing traditions are ancient and date back to the Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks and Arabs. Sicily boasts numerous indigenous grape varieties such as frappato, nero d'Avola, inzolia, catarratto, nerello mascalese and nerello cappuccio, malvasia delle Lipari and moscato d'Alessandria (zibibbo, from the Arabic zibib meaning 'a raisin'). Based on the type of grape, we can understand the cultivation area of the various vines mentioned above: Muscat wines, Moscato di Siracusa and Moscato di Noto we find them in the Syracuse area Wines based on Nero d'Avola, Frappato and Ceraselo di Vittoria DOCG are produced in the province of Ragusa Grillo, Grecanico, Catarratto and Inzolia vines are the protagonists of the Alcamo DOC La Malvasia delle Lipari famous Aeolian Islands in the Messina area On the slopes of Etna, considered 'an island within an island' due to the characteristic lava soil and the microclimate that characterises this area, we find Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, for red, rosé and sparkling wines and Catarratto and Carricante for white wines. From these vines are produced the famous Etna DOC. The province of Caltanissetta is home to one of Sicily's most recent DOCs, the Riesi Marsala is a historic DOC that takes its name from the municipality of the same name in the province of Trapani. Also in the province of Trapani is the island of Pantelleria, where the Passito di Pantelleria White wine - Donnafugata - La fuga chardonnay Sicilia Doc - Data sheet Production area: South-western Sicily, Contessa Entellina estate. GrapesChardonnay. Soil and climateAltitude from 200 to 300 m a.s.l.; hilly terrain; clay loam soils with sub-alkaline reaction (pH 7.5 to 7.9) rich in nutrients (potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc) and total limestone from 20 to 35%). Mild winters; dry and windy summers with large temperature variations between day and night. Vineyard: Vertical trellising with spurred cordon pruning, leaving 6 to 10 buds per plant. Density of 4,500-6,000 plants per hectare, with yields of around 70-80 quintals per hectare. Vintage: A total of 604mm of rain was recorded compared to the average 662mm. In particular, after a winter with little rain, the abundant rainfall in May ensured that the soils were well watered, enabling the vineyard to cope with high temperatures that lasted for about ten days in July. The following weeks were characterised by ideal climatic conditions. The year 2023 was a challenging one: thanks to scrupulous agronomic management, the vegetative production cycle ended regularly, resulting in well-ripened grapes. There was a lower than average production on this estate, of a quality perfectly in line with the company's objectives. Harvest: The harvesting of the Chardonnay for the production of La Fuga began a week later than the average in recent years, and took place around mid-August. Harvesting takes place at the crack of dawn in order to preserve the quality of the grapes during transport from the vineyard to the cellar and to enhance the aromatic qualities during pressing: a sustainable choice also aimed at saving energy. Vinification and ageing: Fermentation takes place in steel at a temperature of 15-16 °C. This is followed by ageing in vats, on the noble dregs, for five months and at least six months in the bottle before being marketed. Tasting notes: Brilliant straw yellow in colour, La Fuga 2023 offers a fragrant bouquet with notes of tropical fruit and peel of citrus fruits (lemon) together with delicate hints of white flowers. In the mouth it is savoury and fresh thanks to a pleasant acidic vein. LongevityBest enjoyed over 4-5 years. Designer labelsGabriella Anca Rallo (founder of Donnafugata together with her husband Giacomo) thought she would 'escape' and start a new life, moving from letters to the land. Gabriella is a woman who knows no rest, always with the wind in her hair. Gabriella invented La Fuga: a label that expresses not only movement, but sunshine and earthiness. At the table: Perfect with vegetable and seafood risottos. Also excellent with chicken with herbs, savoury pies and fish main courses. Serve it in slender glasses of good breadth, can be uncorked at the moment, excellent at 10-12 °C. Analytical DataAlcohol. 13.55 % vol, total acidity 5.6 g/l, pH 3.23. First vintage: This wine was born with the Contessa Entellina DOC in 1994 Find out more: To find out more about Sicilian wines such as Donnafugata's La fuga chardonnay Sicilia Doc, products Torrisis and the culinary traditions of Sicily, we recommend you visit our blog, full of interesting and overwhelming articles recounting its many facets.
